2019 has been a huge year for Marvel Stadium.

In February, we hosted our very first KFC Big Bash League Finals Series, including a history-making Melbourne Derby Grand Final, in which the Melbourne Renegades took home the championship title in front of over 40,000 fans for the first time ever.

In March we passed a special milestone for the stadium with AFL Women’s taking to the ground for the first time since the league’s inception in 2017. The stadium was pleased to welcome all fans, players and officials for a massive Victorian Derby Double-Header.

A few weeks after a Captain Marvel-inspired AFLW event, we kicked off the 2019 Toyota AFL Premiership Season in our first official AFL match since officially being renamed Marvel Stadium. The event included new Marvel experiences and activations for footy fans to enjoy, such as the Spider-Man Climbing Wall. The night also involved a special celebrity appearance from Western Bulldogs fan and Marvel star, Chris Hemsworth.

Marvel Stadium made history in June by becoming the first Australian venue to win TheStadiumBusiness Awards’ Global Venue of the Year, being recognised for its outstanding achievements throughout 2018.

The 2019 AFL season saw the stadium host 43 home and away games as we welcomed more than 1.3 million footy fans through the turnstiles. Highlights included the annual Good Friday game, Maddie’s Match, Fightback Round, and of course 21 Super Saturdays that enhanced the fan experience and make every patron visit memorable.

Off the field, the 2019 season saw the stadium introduce a range of new food and beverage items, including healthier and gluten-free options. McCafe Outlets were also added in three separate locations throughout the stadium, offering footy fans attending the chance to warm up with a hot beverage.

As the footy season ended, our special event season begun, including the stadium hosting the biggest basketball match in the southern hemisphere. Record basketball crowds of 51,218 and 52,079 at the two Boomers vs USA Basketball games saw Marvel Stadium welcome over 103,000 basketball fans through its turnstiles- the biggest crowds ever for basketball games in Australia.

From hosting an AFL match on Sunday night to putting on a Basketball game on Thursday night, Marvel Stadium was completely transformed in just four days. With USA Basketball winning Game 1, history was made in Game 2 with the Basketball Australia Boomers bouncing back and defeating the world champions for the first time in 55 years.

For the historic Boomers v USA Basketball games, Marvel Stadium and Joe and Renae Ingles partnered together to create Melbourne’s first stadium sensory room, an accessible and inclusive environment that is a quiet and safe space for children and adults with autism, dementia, PTSD and other similar conditions to deregulate from sensory overload, while still being able to enjoy the gameday experience.

UFC 243

In October, the stadium hosted a huge attendance of 57,127 Ultimate Fighting Championship fans for UFC 243: WHITTAKER vs. ADESANYA. This broke the record for the highest attended event in UFC history, surpassing the previous record set at UFC 193 at the stadium in 2015.

Weeks later, the stadium was transformed again, welcoming back RNB Fridays Live for the second year in a row, as RNB legends such as Janet Jackson and Black Eyed Peas lit up the stadium in the party of the year. The following week, Irish rock-band U2 returned to the stadium for their third concert tour in front of 58,080 fans.

We hosted the 2019 International Convention of Jehovah’s Witnesses, and just six days later 7,500 tonnes of dirt was transported in to the stadium for the AUS-X open – the biggest off-road motorcycle racing and action sports event in Australian history and the southern hemisphere.

Earlier in December, we held the RMIT Graduation – now in its 20th year at our venue. It is an event we are proud to host and be a part of annually.

We are excited for our upcoming summer of sport, including the remainder of the Hyundai A-League 2019/20 season and welcoming back current BBL Champions, Melbourne Renegades for the KFC Big Bash League|09.

We would like to thank all members and fans for their support throughout the year, and we look forward to sharing 2020, our 20th Birthday and the exciting journey ahead!
